Why It Matters

Ice dams are one of the biggest winter threats to Rhode Island homes. They don't just cause exterior problems — they force water backward under shingles, leading to soaked insulation, ceiling stains, mold, and hidden structural damage. Homeowners often don’t realize the leak came from an ice dam until it’s too late.

What Causes Ice Dams

Ice dams form when three things happen at the same time:

1. Heat escapes from your atticWarm air melts the snow on your roof, even when temperatures outside are freezing.

2. Melted snow flows down to the colder edgesOnce the water reaches the unheated eaves, it re-freezes.

3. A wall of ice forms and traps more water behind itThis trapped water is what pushes under shingles and leaks into the house.

Common contributing issues:

  • Poor attic insulation

  • Weak ventilation

  • Air leaks around recessed lights, chimneys, or attic hatches

  • Heavy New England snowstorms followed by freezing nights

  • Clogged gutters holding frozen water

How to Stop Ice Dams Before They Start

1. Improve attic insulationThe #1 fix. When warm air stays out of the attic, snow stays frozen and stable.

2. Boost attic ventilationRidge vents + soffit vents give heat a place to escape, keeping roof temps even.

3. Seal air leaksPatch gaps around lights, plumbing vents, exhaust fans, and attic entrances.

4. Keep gutters cleanIce builds fastest when gutters are full. Clean gutters allow meltwater to drain correctly.

5. Install a heat cable system (when needed)For problem areas, heated de-icing cables prevent buildup along the edges.

6. Make sure your roof has proper ice & water shieldRI homes should have at least 3 feet past the interior wall line. Many older homes don’t — and that’s where leaks appear.

Pro Insight

Most Rhode Island ice dam leaks aren’t “roof failures” — they’re ventilation failures.Fixing ventilation and insulation typically eliminates ice dams permanently and often improves your roof’s lifespan.

When to Call for Help

Contact a professional if you notice:

  • Large icicles forming along the roofline

  • Water stains after snowstorms

  • Dripping from ceilings or light fixtures

  • Ice ridges building along the edges of the roof

  • Leaks that only appear in winter

These signs indicate internal moisture problems that shouldn’t wait.
