Most roofing advice online feels technical, dramatic, or meant to scare homeowners into a replacement. That’s not what this is. These are real, simple, everyday tips that help Rhode Island homeowners feel confident, prepared, and protected — without climbing a ladder or turning into a roofing expert.
These are the same tips we give our own family.
**1. The “10-Second Driveway Scan”
A no-pressure way to spot early roof issues**
Once a month, just stop in your driveway and look at your roof for 10 seconds. Ask yourself:
Does anything look different than last time?
Any darker patches or shiny spots?
Any shingles sitting a little uneven?
You’re not looking for perfection — just changes. Roofs rarely fail overnight. Subtle changes are your early warning system.
2. Check Your Downspouts After a Storm — Not the Roof
This trick tells the real story.
If you see sand-like granules in the downspout, your shingles are aging faster than they should. If you see little pieces of black tar, your shingles are cracking under stress. If you see nothing unusual, you’re probably in good shape.
Downspouts are the roof’s “report card.”
3. The Gutter Line Test
A roof can look great, but the edges tell the truth.
From the ground, look ONLY at the bottom row of shingles along the gutter line. If they look:
wavy
saggy
uneven
or slightly curled
…it usually means water is sitting where it shouldn’t. Early catch = easy fix. Ignore it and it becomes rot.
4. Listen for Your Roof After Windstorms
This sounds strange — but it works.
Stand outside the next time you get a big wind gust. If you hear:
flapping
clicking
tapping
…that’s shingles lifting in real-time. Even small movements break the seal.
If you hear nothing? That’s what you want.
5. Feel Your Ceilings, Not Your Roof
People always look up for leaks. Instead, feel the ceiling in rooms directly under the roof after storms:
Is it colder than the rest of the room?
Does it feel damp or softer?
Small temperature changes often show moisture long before stains appear.
6. The 60-Second Attic Check
No tools. No climbing on rafters. Just look.
Pop your attic hatch once every few months and check:
Nails dripping? (Condensation)
Frost on the underside of decking?
Musty smell?
Strangely, many “roof leaks” aren’t roof leaks at all — they’re ventilation issues.
Fixing ventilation saves roofs more than people realize.
7. Don’t Trust Moss, Even If It Looks Cute
Moss looks harmless — like New England charm. But under that charm is moisture, and under moisture is shingle decay.
If you see moss:
Don’t spray random chemicals
Don’t try to scrub it off
Don’t pressure wash
Just call someone who knows how to remove it safely. Done wrong, moss removal is worse than moss itself.
8. Trim Trees BEFORE They Hit the Roof
One of the biggest roof killers in RI isn't storms…It’s tree limbs brushing the shingles over and over. They sandpaper the surface off slowly.
A 2-minute trim saves a 2,000-dollar repair.
9. Do NOT Ignore “Small Stuff”
Tiny issues lead to the biggest damage:
One loose shingle
One nail pop
One small gap in flashing
Ignoring small stuff is how small issues turn into full replacements.
10. Find a Roofing Company You Can Text Anytime
This is the most important tip.
Homeowners feel safest when they know they can text someone they trust and get a straight answer — no pressure, no upsell, no scare tactics.
That’s how roofing should feel: Comfortable. Honest. Human.
And that’s exactly how we run Roch Brothers.
